National Hair Loss Awareness Month

Did you know that August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month? With summer still in full swing in Canada, it’s easy for excessive hair loss to go unnoticed by most people. The unfortunate truth is that up to 40% of women will experience some degree of severe hair loss in their lifetime and approximately 50% of women in North American notice less than the average amount of hair they previously had. As we mentioned in our previous blog, there are a number of reasons why hair loss is affecting so many women at a rapid pace.

Women Hair Loss

On average, it is normal to lose approximately 100 hairs per day in order to allow for new hair to grow, if it seems that you are losing a lot more hairs than that, you may wish to have it diagnosed by a medical professional.

There are two main types of hair loss:

Alopecia is a medical term for baldness and there are multiple types of alopecia. Most forms of alopecia cause permanent hair loss, which are hereditary or due to genetics, hormones and autoimmune system.

Telogen Effluvium is hair loss caused the hair roots pushed to the premature resting phase in the hair’s life cycle when the hair follicles no longer grow and are ready to fall off the scalp. This is generally due to some sort of shock or stress to the body such as child birth, major surgery, poor dieting, severe infection or illness, etc.

Hair Loss

While hair may seem like merely a cosmetic trait to most people, hair loss is commonly associated with negative psychological and emotional effects on an individual such as depression, lack of confidence and social isolation. Women are also known to be more emotionally affected by hair loss than men.
